The Air Up There

A tandem skydive jump just isn’t Brian Vickers’ style. He wanted to free fall on his own — and so he did.

The driver of Red Bull Racing Team’s No. 83 completed his first solo skydive Tuesday under the guidance of the Red Bull Air Force, a group of air-savvy professionals who know a thing or two about “aero push.”

Vickers took a required Accelerated Free Fall class and spent the first part of the day at a specialized wind tunnel in Orlando, Fla., simulating the forces he felt in the sky. After the class, Vickers jumped out of a perfectly safe airplane all by himself above DeLand, Fla.

You can watch Vickers experience the ride of his life, as the jump will be part of ESPN’s coverage of Saturday’s Nationwide Series race.

People are blowing motors left and right during speedweeks, 6 of them are Toyota engines, anyone know if redbull has lost one? I thought AJ did but wasnt sure, anyone know if the 83 did?

AJ had to change before qualifying and Brian had an issue, not sure if they changed the engine or were able to fix the problem...

They had some good averages today, hope it transfers over to tomorrow! :)

Every single Hendrick engine had to be changed today after Dale Jr. detonated one. One of the Gibbs guys changed one sometime earlier, I think. But it's early in the season and Toyota is in the middle of a major overhaul. This'll happen. We should be competing for wins on a weekly basis within 10 weeks.

I would be caught DEAD doing that! I caught Brian on NASCAR Now last night talking about it. Can't wait to see the footage Saturday! You can tell he really enjoyed it!

My husband used to skydive and he loved it. I think I'd have a heart attack.

With all of the engine changes AJ now starts on the pole. The only problem is it also brings Busch and Wallace forward.

I think AJ has to start in the back too b/c of his engine change.

Glad BV had fun but he's insane!!

Since we are all somewhat confused at this point about engine changes and moving to the back, can you please tell us what postions BV and AJ are actually going to start in for the duel? Surely somewhat at Red Bull knows for sure.

Hooollly Crap!!! I love this stuff. Great job by BV and the whole team. You faced a lot of adversity (got spun, short notice pit stop on lap 30 and a fast pit stop with 5 to go) in 60 short laps and made it through. WOW! Great run guys. Go get 'em boys!

I feel so bad for AJ and the 84 team. They worked just as hard but AJ said the car was tight from the start. Hold your head up fellas, we know you'll be there in the end. Good things are on the horizon for the RBRT.

Being there today...AJ was awesome, with very little help he went from the back to the front 2x's. Awesome job and awesome car! #83 team AWESOME job. Did a great job not getting down with the bad breaks! Good luck Sunday!

No one should ever question Brian's ability to drive a race car. It was unbelivable to see him over come all the obstacles. It just goes to show that you can't keep a good man down. After all the bad breaks we had last year, we needed some good luck. Good Luck in the 500! STAY SAFE!!!

AJ---your time is coming. You and the 84 team have improved so much from last year. We know you'll make the next one.
