Qualifying Pole Day, Simply Put

The long-awaited Daytona 500 Pole Day is now upon us. Daytona qualifying is by far the most confusing qualifying session of the year. Simply put, the purpose of today's qualifying session is to lock in the front row for the Daytona 500 (a week from today), and to establish the starting orders for Thursday's Gatorade Duels. The fastest car earns the pole for the Daytona 500 and the pole for the first Gatorade Duel race. The second-fastest car earns the outside pole for the Daytona 500 and the pole for the second Gatorade Duel race. The two duel races are 150-miles qualifying races that will set positions 3-39 for the 500.

Confused yet?

Here is the simple version of how the Daytona 500 lineup is set:
- Spots 1 & 2: The pole sitter & outside pole sitter from today's Pole qualifying
- Spots 3-39: The top-35 in '07 car owners points and two highest finishing teams in each Gatorade Duel races race NOT in the top 35 set by their finishing postion in the Gatorade Duel races.
- Spots 40-42: The fastest qualifiers not already qualified in
- Spot 43: Past champion provisional

Qualifying begins this afternoon at 1:15 PM EST. Brian takes to the track 27th, and AJ goes out 43rd.

here we go again with engin issues, Brian reported ignition problems on 1st lap, then busted out a great lap for not having 1st lap speed. Well, looks like we need to get it done on Thursday

Damn ignition box! Vickers had a shot at it if that this not go out during his 1st lap.

Alot of progress in a year. I am sure the ignition issue is upsetting but BV is a good plate racer.

Can someone tell me if this is right...since the #55 is on the front row of the 500 and lets say BV and AJ do not race their way in through the Duel 150's but the next 4 go or go homers behind the #55 do, then the #83, #27 and #84 would be the next from the cars outside the top 35 qualifying list to make the race?
If this is the case BV and AJ are still looking good!

Is it just me, but aren't BV and AJ both in even if they aren't one of the 2 highest finishers in each of the 150s, based simply on their qualifying times?

On Fox the said it depends on odd/even ranking of owner points for the dual lineups for teams outside the top 35 but they then had BV and AJ in the same race? BV was 38th and Aj was 43rd so they couln't be in the same race?

its not based on owners points {I saw that too}its based off of the qualifying

See if this page on jayski answers your question. It's got all of the information about how qualifying for Daytona works.

as far as I know, it's based on the qualifying results.

well we didn't get the front row, but seeing how BV picked up so much on lap 2, I think RBRT can start from row 2. Yoter Power! i was laughing when i saw the ticker on the backstretch going from 20ish to 10ish. it was like the #83 car had nitro.

judging by the Bud Shootout, it looked like 2 Yoters can take on 3 Hendrick cars. RBRT will race in. I believe.

I don't mind having AJ and BV in the same duel, it'd be cool to watch them work togther in the draft.

BV and AJ are in the same race and it is set on owner's points. Here are the lineups:

http://www.jayski.com/stats/2008/grids/2008duels-grid.htm

The two I am worried about are #2 Kurt Busch and #87 Kenny Wallace just because Nemechek is in the race.

So BV has two ways to get in based on jayski explanation of how this works but AJ must race in. It will be a race to watch!!!

Hopefully RBRT can take both of the spots in the first dual. Good luck on Thursday guys. Hopefully both guys get some good drafting practice together on Wednesday.

NASCAR really messed up the drivers outside of the 35 in owner points. Since three of those drivers were guaranteed a spot in the race, they all should have all qualified together and started the season out right. Why change the rules and not begin with the first race!

Another ignition problem? Who's in charge of this Steiner?

Ok I'm still kinda confused..

AJ Allmendinger -> needs to finish ahead of BV or Boris.

Brian Vickers -> can still make race via speed. But can he lose this spot somehow?

OK, her is the deal

Pos 1 and 2: Pole sitter and outside pole sitter from Bud Pole qualifying
[no need to be top 35 in prevoius season car Owners Points. we didn't get that, neither RBTR car

Pos 3 thru 39: top 35 in prevoius season car owners points and two highest finishing teams in each Gatorade Duel races race NOT in the top 35 set by their finishing postion in the Gatorade Duel races.

Brian and AJ need to finish 1/2 to be in, not in top 35 owner pts.

Pos 40-42: fastest qualifiers not in by above
Brian is in based on being being 3rd fastest in the go or go homers that didn't make it on speed.

Pos 43: past champion provisional, otherwise the spot goes to the next fastest qualifier.

Good luck RBTR on Thursday, lets all hope they work weel together and we don't need to worry about this formula

Kurt Busch will use this.

Paul

AJ has to race is way in, Brian has to race in OR have any of the 3 go or go homer win and he will get in on speed, or get pos 40-42.

Hey guyz it's great to see such a strong run even with the issues. I think Brian has a very real chance of getting in the race :) He's an awesome plate racer and other drivers know it! He'll have help even if there are only 3 Toyota's in Duel 1.

If all 3 that locked in today get in the top 2 in their duels, Brian gets in on time! :)

Lets rock the duels and Get both bulls in!

WE BELIEVE!!!

Yeah, RBRT had some problems today - but, it sure is nice to read the positive outlook of the comments posted today. Yes, this is the teams 2nd year, but problems can and will still surface. How nice it is to read and get a positiive feeling from my fellow fans. Thanks for the "rooting" instead of the "whining". Go get 'em boys!

Here is what Jayskias has to say about BV: #83-Brian Vickers: Third-fastert non-qualifier, but could make the 500 one of two ways -- if he finishes among the top-2 among the go-or-go-home drivers, or if Waltrip, Nemechek, Reutimann, Said or Carpentier finish top-2 among the drivers not in on owners points.

Good luck, we'll be watching and cheering you on!!!

Wouldn't we need 3 of the 4 (Waltrip, Nemechek, Reutimann, Said or Carpentier) to finish in the top 2 of the go or go home cars for Vickers to make it on his time?

But lets not depends on others and hopefully BV and AJ can take the top 2 spots in there race and we won't have to worry about doing math during the second race.

You are right :) 3 of them need to be in the top 2 of their duels in order for Brian's time to be fast enough...Mikey, Reut, Carp are in duel 2 and Nemecheck and Said are in duel 1 with Brian and AJ...

I do really hope Brian and AJ can race in...I believe they can! :)

WE BELIEVE!!!

There's no doubt in my mind that Team Red Bull has the superior race set up. The only problem is that we have horrible, horrible luck. These COTs are out of control and it wouldn't surprise me if these 150s came down to a race of survival.

I agree Daniel. Hopefully both Red Bull cars can get out front and stay away from all of the crazyness

It looks like the first duel will be the toughest.
Both RB cars need to finish in the top two of the go homers especially AJ. Whatever they do they need to keep Bush and Elliott from taking a position away. It would still work out for BV if Nemecheck or Said finish as the top two in this race and Reutiman and Carpentier finish as the top two in the 2nd duel. I hope that AJ and BV practice drafting together tomorrow!
Good luck boys!!!
